A news update is a short story about an event or situation that has recently happened. Unlike an editorial, which is opinionated, news updates stick to verified facts and direct quotes. They also avoid excessive jargon and technical terms, unless necessary for readers to understand an issue. They should follow AP (Associated Press) style, which is the standard for most journalism.
Many news articles follow a structure known as the Inverted Pyramid format, where the most important information—the who, what, when, where and why of a story—is placed at the top of the article. Other less important, but still relevant, information is then added.
